How this Ministry Operates:

The Immanuel Lutheran Cancer Support Group is open to all those affected by a cancer diagnosis. Group members share experiences and provide spiritual support for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and family members.

Support is given through monthly group sessions, direct assistance to caregivers and families (i.e. transportation, meals, babysitting), access to information and support materials, group prayer for individuals and families, Scripture study, and testimonials of faith. In 2008-2009 the Cancer Support Group completed two video series by Ken Curtis, (1) Reflections on Psalm 23, for people with cancer, and (2) Reflections on the Lord's prayer, for people with cancer. Members meet the first Tuesday of each month in Rm. 107B/C or Rm. 107E/F (in the Fellowship Hall) from 7 to 8 p.m.

Traveling Together Through the Valley to the Pastures…

In 2010, the Immanuel Lutheran Cancer Support group is going to reprise the series Reflections on Psalm 23, for people with cancer. This song, written by King David, is the most popular song in world history. Its words have brought more comfort and courage to more people at more times at more places than any other words ever written. When you combine its comfort and courage...then hope is generated!

What can Immanuel members do to help

Please encourage those you know that have been impacted by cancer to attend our monthly support group meetings. Reach out in any way you can to those who have been diagnosed or to their care-givers. Help support Immanuel's ministry in Wheeling for Healing (which raises funds for Community Memorial Hospital’s cancer wing) and many other wonderful efforts in our community. Most of all, pray!

Lifting Each Other Up in Prayer

This prayer was "assembled" by our Cancer Support Group from Scripture passages and from other shared messages of faith and support provided by our individual experiences with cancer:

Heavenly Father, we pray for Your healing and strength. We ask for our bodies and spirits to be renewed, so that we may face the days ahead. We pray that those close to us are soothed by your presence and are comforted through their faith in You. We ask that Your compassion give care to the care-givers and peace to those who have suffered loss. We pray for those who meet here tonight in Your Name, for those in our congregation in need of Your strength, and all who face the human reality of cancer. Help us to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, but let us encourage one another -- and all the more as the day approaches. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
