Spotlight on...Contemporary Music 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Do you love listening (and hey, admit it, singing along) to contemporary Christian music, from your treasured albums by pioneering artists such as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, to today’s up-and-coming artists on stations such as K-Love 105.3 FM? Have you ever thought about sharing your passion for these inspiring, uplifting, and worshipful tunes with others at church?

Immanuel has several contemporary music groups; check them out below and decide which may be the right fit for you. Next thing you know, you might be singing in front of more than your bedroom mirror or the driver in the car beside yours! Best of all, you won’t be singing solo anymore; you’ll be serving God by encouraging fellow worshippers to lift their voices in praise to our Heavenly Father.

Contemporary Choir

The Contemporary Choir sings with the band during contemporary services, singing an “anthem” in addition to leading congregational songs.

Participation requires adequate singing ability, singing in parts (SATB), high school age and older, and a worshipful heart with a desire for excellence. Rehearsals are held on 3 Tuesday nights before the service, meeting in the Chapel (Cry Room) or the sanctuary from 6:45 to about 8:00 p.m.

Contemporary Musicians

Guitarists, keyboardists, bass players, and drummers accompany the Contemporary Choir or Praise Band vocalists on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at the 10:45 a.m. service. Musicians need to have a worshipful heart, competence on their instrument, and desire a standard of excellence in service to God.

Drummers and bass players must have an excellent sense of rhythmic accuracy. Nota Bene: An additional drummer is needed for upcoming contemporary services. Non-members or members from other churches are also utilized depending on instrument need. Winds, brass and strings are occasionally used throughout the year.

Contemporary Praise Band

The Praise Band leads songs at contemporary services. The Band consists of 4 to 6 singers, along with keyboard, guitars, bass and drums. Praise Band vocalists sing harmony with written music or improvised parts. Occasionally an “anthem” or “special music” is prepared in addition to congregational songs. The group has also provided music for various events including Christmas caroling at Brookfield Square and Neighborhood FamilyFest.

Director Jay Isaacson selects the singers, welcoming others as needed. Qualifications include a sincere desire to lead the congregation in singing, a worshipful heart, and decent vocal aptitude. Rehearsals are generally on the Monday prior to the service at 6:30 p.m. in a school classroom, or more as needed.

Contemporary Special Music Events this Easter Season:

The Contemporary Choir, Family Singers, and several Contemporary Praise Band members are currently preparing a contemporary cantata, “The Sacrifice.” This Easter musical/DVD concept presents a powerful interactive Easter worship experience using filmed DVD characters, live narration, choir and soloists. The singers will be performing “The Sacrifice” on a Sunday in April, at the 8:00 and 10:45 a.m. worship services.

In addition, singers are looking forward to joining voices with the other choirs for a combined choir on Easter Sunday.
