Neighbor Outreach
National Night Out

Many cities in America schedule a national night out in the summertime and make many resources available so neighbors can have an exciting and safe neighborhood get-together. You could be the catalyst for an easy party your neighbors will be talking about for a long time.
First, call your city’s chamber of commerce to see if they are part of a national neighborhood night out, or if they have scheduled their own citywide event. On that evening, many cities will send their emergency personnel (such as firefighters, paramedics, and police officers) to your neighborhood to tell your children about their jobs. Some cities even provide a small amount of cash to buy supplies and send a “party van” that provides activities for the children at your party. Neighbors who know each other create safer neighborhoods, so most cities are eager to reward neighborhoods that get together for this kind of celebration. If your city doesn’t make provisions for a night like this, don’t hesitate to call your local fire department or police department and ask if they would reserve some personnel for the event you are planning. Most departments are more than happy to come and spend time with the families on your block, talking about how they serve the community and showing off their vehicles and equipment (this is exciting for children!). If you are really ambitious, go to www.nationlnightout.org/nno and request an organizational kit that will guide you and your neighbors in putting this event together. Don’t make the mistake of doing it all! Begin talking to your neighbors about your idea. Ask them if they would be interested in helping to plan a party. Neighbors are more likely to participate when they can contribute. Share the work with everybody. Even if they say no, just asking people begins a relationship. And it’s all about relationships! When you find enough interested people, identify a meeting time that works for them. Then send an invitation to the rest of your neighbors, asking them to your house to plan the party. Instant Intentions This event provides a great opportunity to involve your small group or church in helping you serve your neighbors by providing carnival-like games during your event. Your neighbors will be forever grateful for the time to visit with each other as your Christian friends care for their children. Remind church members not to turn this into an evangelistic event. As long as they do a really good job of providing entertainment for the children, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for meaningful spiritual conversations. Your neighbors will be more apt to listen to the truth about Jesus from someone like you, whom they know and trust. These first impressions go a long way in making your neighbors feel comfortable when you invite them to a dinner at your house. - From the book, Field Guide to Neighborhood Outreach by Group Publishing, 2007.
