How this Ministry Operates

Immanuel members work in collaboration with Lutheran Social Services to sponsor refugee families from around the world. Thus far, the Refugee Co-Sponsorship Committee has looked after refugees from Iran, Somalia, and Burma (Myanmar). This involves assistance with housing, jobs, and transportation as families settle in the United States.

A Big Transition

“When a refugee arrives they need everything from a place to stay to household item,” says Linda Schuler, who serves on the committee. “Families adjust and become self-sufficient fairly quickly with the support of people like members from Immanuel.”

World Refugee Day

The United Nations has designated Friday, June 20th as a special day to celebrate the world’s refugees. Lutheran Social Services is celebrating with a dinner, hosted by Immanuel, to recognize the successes and contributions of refugees resettled in Wisconsin.

How You Can Participate in this Special Event

The doors will open on this first annual World Refugee Day Dinner at 6 p.m. at Immanuel. The dinner buffet will be served at 7 p.m. Performances of traditional dances and music will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The refugees (who are from 8 different countries) will be making the food for the buffet. They will also create unique crafts for the bazaar. All proceeds from the event will be used to support newly arriving families.

Tickets are $15 per adult, $10 for children ages 4-17, and children under the age of four are free. Or, if you choose to donate household or furniture items (see order form for a complete list) at the event, tickets are available for the reduced cost of $12 per adult and $8 per child ages 4-17.

To attend this multicultural event and support the work of refugee resettlement, complete an order form and mail it, or drop it off at the Church Office. Pick up forms for the World Refugee Day Dinner at the Information Center Desk. For answers to any questions about this event or participating in this ministry, contact Linda Schuler , Susan Klagmann or Lutheran Social Services.
